粘土砖也叫烧结砖，是建筑所用的人造小型块材，粘土砖以粘土（包括页岩、煤矸石等粉料）为主要原料，经过泥料处理、成型、干燥和焙烧而成，有实心和空心的分别。那么粘土砖和高铝砖的区别究竟在哪里呢？
高铝砖是铝含量大于百分之四十八的耐火制品，高铝砖耐火度与荷重软化温度都均高于粘土砖，抗渣蚀性较好，但是热稳定性不如粘土砖好。高铝砖致密度高，气孔率低、耐磨。一些炉型的炉头和炉底部位，用高铝砖砌筑效果较好；但是如果是炭素炉用特定粘土砖，用高铝砖反而就不合适了，因为高铝砖在高温下容易产生卷边翘角。
粘土砖是铝含量在百分之三十五至四十五，是用硬质的粘土熟料，经过粒度要求进行配料，经过成型、干燥后，在1300-1400℃温度下烧制而成。粘土砖烧制过程，其实是高岭石不断地失水分解生成莫来石结晶的过程。粘土砖属于弱酸性的耐火制品，能够抵抗酸性熔渣与气体的侵蚀。
粘土砖在零至一千摄氏度的温度范围内，粘土砖的体积随温度升高均匀膨胀，线膨胀曲线近似于一条直线，线膨胀率为百分之零点六至零点七。粘土砖温度超过1200℃后，粘土砖中的低熔点物开始逐渐熔化，因颗粒受表面张力的作用而互相靠得很紧，从而产生体积收缩。
高铝砖主要用于砌筑高炉、电炉炉顶、鼓风炉、回转窑内衬等。高铝砖广泛用做平炉蓄热式格子砖、浇注系统用的塞头、水口砖等。但高铝砖的价格要比粘土砖高，所以用粘土砖能够满足要求的地方还是选用粘土砖。
